On Saturday, September 11, acclaimed singer Ustad Farida Mahwash will be one of 11 remarkable vocalists featured in the “Let Her Sing” concert at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The concert is produced by Diaspora Arts Connection, which is “dedicated to championing North American musicians with roots in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.” The concert’s title, “Let Her Sing,” refers to government policies and social attitudes that prevent or discourage women from studying music and performing in public in countries like Iran, Sudan, and Taliban-controlled Afghanistan,” notes Andrew Gilbert in the September 6, 2021 issue of The San Francisco Chronicle. Tickets to the live performance are available through City Box Office.
With Creative Work Fund support, Ustad Mahwash is collaborating with Afsaneh Arts and Culture Society on a project that has been delayed due the the COVID-19 pandemic.
