CWF 2022 grantees Cleavon Smith and Walking Cinema’s collaboration opens on April 26, 2024 as a new immersive theater production in the Fillmore district of San Francisco. The Fillmore Eclipse explores the glorious history of Black art and entrepreneurship in the Fillmore, and the enormous disenfranchisement that the community went through during urban renewal. Modeled after Bop City, a 1950s after-hours jazz joint and a confluence point for San Francisco’s thriving African American community and Japanese Americans rebuilding their lives after internment. The family friendly experience, for ages 9 and older, features a house band, cocktails, and a range of actors and hidden artifacts to explore.
This is an intimate experience for a small audience and has a limited 13 performances from April 26 – May 12 at Honey Art Studio at 1981 Sutter Street at Fillmore St. in San Francisco. Tickets are available on the show’s website. Tax-deductible donations and special ticket packages can be found on the project’s GoFundMe page.
