Artist Rene Yung collaborated with the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park to create Chinese Whispers: Bay Chronicles, exploring the little-known history of 19th Century Chinese Shrimp fishers on the San Francisco Bay. Now working with oral histories of Chinese immigrants to the Bay Area, Yung’a Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate, a multi-media performance, is being presented in the South Side Theater, Fort Mason Center, March 18 and 19 at 8 p.m.and March 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available.
The interview-based work features handed down family memories, juxtaposed against personal stories from immigrants in San Francisco Chinatown today. The performance features nine inter-generational storytellers, written and directed by Rene Yung, co-directed by Fe Bongolan, with lighting and projection design by Stephanie Anne Johnson, and sound design by Jeremiah Moore.
