Collaborating with the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, Patricia Montgomery retold stories of heroines of the Civil Rights movement through story quilts fashioned into swing coats — each coat representing a different African American heroine. Warmly received since their premiere exhibition in Oakland, eight of the coats are part of Narratives of the Soul, an exhibition of African American story quilts, opening July 8 at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The exhibit continues through September 19. The exhibition at the Spencer is affiliated with the first African American Quilt Convention in Lawrence — taking place July  12-15, 2017.

November 2-5, Montgomery’s coats will be part of a special exhibition at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. She and her work are featured in this Friends@Festival article.
