In collaboration with Arts Benicia, environmental artist Mark Brest van Kempen has developed three temporary public art projects to bring attention to the desirability and potential for site-specific public art at the Benicia Waterfront. The third piece in the series — a floating sculpture entitled Floating Marsh — is on view at the Benicia Marina during Arts Benicia Open Studios, May 7 and 8, 2016.
The public is invited to celebrate the piece at 8 p.m. on May 7 at the Boat Launching Ramp in the Benicia Marina near the base of East 5th Street.
The sculpture, based on a sailboat contributed by Phil Joy, incorporates native aquatic plants useful in bioremediation (removing toxins from water and soil), and features digital projections on its “sail.” The sailboat is fitted with a series of floats that support wetland plants whose roots hang down into the water. It explores the important role that wetland plants play in enhancing water quality. It was constructed by the artist with assistance from community volunteers.
