On Sunday, January 10, Gautam Tejas Ganeshan will perform new songs in the South Indian Carnatic tradition at the Starline Social Club in Oakland. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., the performance begins at 4 p.m., and tickets are available.
Songwriter and performer Ganeshan received a Creative Work Fund grant in 2013 to collaborate with the Tree of Life/Subterranean Arthouse in Berkeley to create contemporary work in the Carnatic tradition. He developed ideas for the series with other songwriters working in many styles, and he performed his creations in a series of monthly concerts at the Arthouse. The Arthouse is now closing and Ganeshan — along with Gopal Ravindhran, Matthew Rahaim, and Ella Milliken Detro — is bringing work from the project along with other new songs to the Starline Social Club. He has posted 67 original songs on his website.
