Identifying and Sustaining Good Partnerships

Our legacy and funders

The Creative Work Fund was developed through collaboration among four foundations and it, in turn, focuses on supporting collaborations. Currently it is a program of the Walter & Elise Haas Fund that also is supported by a generous grant from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Definitions

  • Collaboration is
a mutually beneficial and well-defined relationship entered into by two or more organizations to achieve common goals.
    (Paul W. Mattessich, Ph.D. & Barbara R. Monsey, M.P.H. Wilder Research Center)
  • Collaboration is
…more than the intersection of common goals seen in cooperative ventures, [it’s] a deep, collective, determination to reach an identical objective.
  • From the perspective of The Creative Work Fund, collaboration is
an active, mutually beneficial partnership between an artist and an organization or among a group of artists and organizations to create a new work of art.
  • We like this quote from Meredith Monk: “In a good collaboration, both people let go of their territory to make a third thing that neither one can make alone.” (From the Grantmakers in the Arts Reader, interview with John Killacky–Summer 2014)
