Two-time Creative Work Fund grant recipient Sue Mark and Marksearch (who collaborated most recently with Kala Art Institute) began working in Japan in early 2020 to develop a new project, Journey Itself Home, a mobile and sonic work to be presented in conjunction with the 2020 Summer Olympics. The project is supported by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission. A master of building works out of conversations with community members, she and her husband Bruce Douglas, along with Japanese artists, have been working with survivors of the March 11, 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Along with the Summer Olympics, Journey Itself Home has been postponed until 2021, but the artists now invite you to join a round-table conversation about the potential of art to support emotional resilience and healing. They write, “As we seem to be in a perpetual ‘state of emergency,’ Fukuoka-Oakland Sister City organization is hosting this conversation with US-Japan artists, a unique way to acknowledge grief and access hope through art.” FOFA’s Vice-President Honomi Ijima a Kanagawa-based researcher, community builder, and granddaughter of 3-11 disaster survivors, will moderate this conversation. English-Japanese interpretation will be provided.
