Film director Sam Ball of Citizen Film has been collaborating with the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life’s curator Francesco Spagnolo and refugees from Africa, the Middle East, and Nazi Germany to investigate their prized possessions as stories. In Spagnolo’s words, they have been, “questioning the meaning of cultural heritage in a time of fluctuating borders and identities.” From this material, Ball has created an immersive video, “What We Carry With Us: A Refugee Storylab,” on view now through December 13 at the Magnes as part of the exhibit, “Memory Objects: Judaica Collections and Global Migrations.” The Magnes Collection’s public hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
