Iron Shoes opened in previews on March 15 at Shotgun Players’ Ashby Stage; and, on that first night, the creative team announced that tickets were selling so quickly that the production run is being extended by two weeks, through April 29.
Developed over six years through a rich collaboration among director/choreographer Erika Chong Shuch, composer/music director Janet Kutulas, playwright/librettist Michelle Carter, and Kitka, Women’s Vocal Ensemble, Iron Shoes is a contemporary folk opera that re-imagines classic Eastern European fairytales as radical new stories of our time. With its 15-member cast and talented design team, it also is Kitka’s most ambitious undertaking to date. Andrew Gilbert in The San Francisco Chronicle wrote a compelling preview piece.
