Composer Gabriela Lena Frank is collaborating with Quinteto Latino and Fuse Theatre to develop and premiere Mitos, an hour-long theatrical performance piece incorporating storytelling, movement, and musical composition for wind quintet. The piece will be based on mythological stories from Central and South America. Family workshops will be hosted online to develop artistic, musical, written, and/or TikTok responses to the composition.
Gabriela Lena Frank has worked with an array of local and international groups, has been nominated for two Grammys, and was awarded a 2010 United States Artist Fellowship, among other recognition. Her music is vigorous, colorful, and deeply concerned with her intercultural (Peruvian/Chinese) identity and steeped in a deep knowledge of the folklore tradition of the Andes. Mitos will be her first composition for wind quintet.
Founded in 2004 by French horn player Armando Castellano, Quinteto Latino is dedicated to performing, educating about, and advocating for classical music by Latino/a and Latin American composers. Organizational partner Fuse Theatre is moving forward with working with families and youth online, sharing Mitos music and myths, to create their own or their interpretations through the art of alebrijes, music and playwriting. Students will be encouraged to share their work in two ways: TikTok videos and a culminating Online Celebration with all workshop participants in spring 2021. The musicians and composer relish this opportunity to experiment outside of their accustomed modes.
