The Creative Work Fund was sad to readnews earlier this week of the death of Ruth Asawa at age 87. In 1999, the Fund supported a collaboration between media artist Valerie Soe and the Ruth Asawa Fund that created the documentary film Each One Teach One, tracing Asawa’s role in developing the Alvarado Arts Project, a model artists-in-schools program at a public school in San Francisco. Asawa maintained an ambitious and important career as a sculptor while also fighting for a stronger role for the arts in public education–particularly in the San Francisco Unified School District. She will be sorely missed.
