Traditional artist Bongo Sidibe is premiering The Madness of the Elephant: A West African Dance, Music and Theater Performance Exploring the Reign of Guinea’s First President, Sekou Touré on April 5 and 6 at 8:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. To create the piece, Sidibe has collaborated with African Advocacy Network, Duniya Dance and Drum Company, and African artists living in the Bay Area. Guinea’s first president Sekou Touré, nicknamed the “Elephant,” was a benefactor of Guinea’s traditional arts as well as a paranoid dictator. The Madness of the Elephant navigates through some of the complications of living under Touré’s leadership and looks into Guinea’s future. Tickets are available through the Jewish Community Center.
