Jo Kreiter and her company Flyaway Productions collaborated with Dancers’ Group to develop and present “The Live Billboard Project,” combining aerial choreography with a customized, large-scale billboard facing Mission Street at a busy San Francisco street corner. Other collaborating artists were visual designer David Frederickson of figureplant, rigger Sean Riley, composer Carla Kihlstedt, and lighting designer Matthew Antacky.

The project examined the effect of women’s images in public space and the loss of public space to corporate messages.  Suspended within the billboard’s design, dancers performed a 30-minute work for standing audiences.

Described by the New York Times as “a wonder of equilibrium,” San Francisco-based choreographer Jo Kreiter is founder and artistic director of Flyaway Productions. The company performs off-the-ground dances that expose the range and power of women’s physicality.

Dancers’ Group, founded in 1982, assists and supports the San Francisco Bay Area’s Dance Community by creating a nexus of resources, expertise, and knowledge. “The Live Billboard Project” was part of Dancers’ Group Presents, an off-site presenting series that was new at the time of this project and has been continued.
