The Fremont Symphony Orchestra sponsors a longstanding annual Young Composer’s Competition. Fremont school children are invited to write short pieces for the contest, and the winners’ works then are orchestrated by a composer and performed by the orchestra at its annual Children’s Concerts.

In 2013, the orchestra selected six winning pieces from previous Young Composer’s Competitions and invited elementary school students to respond to them by creating short videos. Videographer Jeremy Knight met with participating students at 10 schools to guide them in creating their pieces. Knight, the symphony’s artistic staff, and composer/arranger Jeff Beal then transformed the compositions and videos into an 8 minute and a 15:45 minute multimedia work titled “Musical Visions.” The finished pieces were performed at Ohlone College in a special Children’s Concert for students from Fremont schools and by the orchestra as part of its 50th Anniversary season.

Lead artist Knight has been actively involved in videography and projection design for more than a decade. His work ranges from simple videos of opera productions to multiscreen theatrical projects that substitute for sets and scenery for live performances. He has collaborated with stage and music directors at opera companies across the country.

Founded in 1964, the Fremont Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to bringing live, quality classical music to residents of southern Alameda and northern Santa Clara counties by maintaining a professional regional symphony of high artistic quality and offering accessible and affordable programming.
